Welcome to Chispa Ceramics!

The name "chispa" - Spanish for spark - captures the essence of my creative process: that initial flash of inspiration, the transformation by fire, and the vibrant energy my pieces bring to your space.

Mask Collection

This collection began with the Samurai mask featured in the video above. My inspiration struck while watching the series "Shogun" - I became captivated by the aesthetics of Japan's Shogun era, particularly the intricate, detailed design of the battle helmets worn by samurai warriors, and the rich culture surrounding them. After completing "Spirit of Shogun," I found I wasn't ready to leave Japan behind. The idea for a Geisha mask emerged, which became "Butterfly Maiden." Through both pieces, I sought to honour centuries of cultural tradition and express my deep admiration for Japan.

As my fascination with masks deepened, I began exploring other cultures. My journey led me to ancient Mayan civilisation and the profound symbolism embedded in their ceremonial masks - ancient iconography steeped in spiritual expression. But as the work evolved, it opened doorways to something more universal: the magical language of nature itself.

Each piece explores the fluid boundaries between form and feeling, capturing the quiet pulse of growth and renewal. These masks transcend ornament - they're meditations on our forgotten connection to the natural and ancient world, inviting us to remember that we, too, are part of nature's endless transformation.

About the artist

Hi, I’m Michaela,

being a software engineer by trade, I discovered ceramics as a therapeutic outlet - a way to create with my hands and reconnect with something tangible and organic. After years of working on the wheel, I found my true practice in hand building. What draws me to this process is the time it takes to build a single piece and the transformation that unfolds along the way.

I never know exactly what I'll create when I begin. I start with a vague concept, an idea that feels right in the moment, but the piece evolves and changes many times throughout its journey. That's the beauty of it - the way my work develops organically, revealing itself through the slow, meditative process of building, refining, and firing. Each piece becomes a collaboration between intention and discovery, between what I envision and what the clay wants to become.
